The continent of Africa is full of culture, creativity, and beautiful landscapes, but there is so much more to this beautiful land! Say hello to the next “it” spot when it comes to fashion.
Africa’s fashion accolades have received some attention in the media as of late. The May issue of L’Uomo Vogue highlighted Africa and all it’s glory. Also, the International Herald Tribune Luxury conference will be focusing on the region’s potential for manufacturing and the consumers of the African middle class.
Enyinne Owunwanne, founder of African online fashion retailer Heritage 1960, is helping to promote up and coming African designers, which are making a major impact in the fashion industry. Are you a sucker for exotic prints in a variety of styles? Then you will love J. Label by Lisa Folawiyo. The Nigerian designer has a collection which includes flirty skirts and wild prints sure to bring your inner animal out! Rawr!
The great potential is there to see what the African people can bring to the table. As Owunwanne states on his website “Africa offers so much more than kente cloth and wax prints.” Now that Africa is being recognized for their rich and diverse designs, it will be interesting to see what else they have to offer.
Forget the typical Milan and Paris, look to Cape Town or Nairobi for your next Fashion Week destination for a walk on the wild side!
